mt. zion church cemetery
Mt. Zion Cemetery and church building is located about 15 miles from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Approximately 3 miles from the Richardsville water tower on Mt. Zion Church Road - overlooking a high bluff on Barren River. There are approximately 340 marked graves in the cemetery, more or less as some graves may not be marked and some are only depressions in the soil.
In the 1800’s, Mr. William Brown & his wife Mary were very influential and prosperous people in the Greencastle community. Mr. Brown was very instrumental in the building of the Swan Creek Church of Christ (later changed to Mt. Zion Church of Christ). William and Mary were charter members of the church at this time. Mr. Brown donated the three acres of land to be used for worship and a cemetery.
Benjamin and Sidna Ann Crews Runner (pictured above) have more decedents buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery than any other family. Benjamin and Sidna are not listed as charter members of Mt. Zion. Sidna died in 1862, only ten years after Mt. Zion was founded. There were only twelve marked graves when she was buried. Names of decedents of Benjamin and Sidna buried at MTZ include: Mahan, Whalin, Hightower, Shields, Miller, Reeves, Sandidge, Doyle, Keown, Taylor and Stahl.
